Multi-Factor Authentication iPhone/iPad Setup

iPhone/iPad setup with Microsoft Authenticator and SMS Text Messages

This tutorial will guide you through the preferred Multi-Factor Authentication setup using the Microsoft Authenticator app and SMS text messaging. 

Follow the steps below to setup Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for your iPhone or iPad (mobile device).

  1. Open a web browser and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
  2. Enter your UADA email address and click “Next”

  3. Enter your password and click “Sign In”

    2. Troubleshooting step:  If you get an error when you sign in, try a Google Chrome Incognito Window and then start from step 1. 

  4. Click “Next” to begin MFA registration

  5. Install the Apple App Store - Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.  Click “Next”

  6. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device and touch “Add account”

  7. Touch “Work or school account” on your mobile device

  8. Touch “OK” on your mobile device to allow the app to scan the QR code on your computer screen.

  9. On the computer click “Next”

  10. Hold your mobile device's back camera over the QR code on the computer monitor.  Once the scan is complete, click “Next”.

  11. The Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device should now look similar to the image below.

  12. The computer screen should now also confirm the setup was successful. A push notification will automatically be sent to your mobile device.

  13. Touch “Approve” on your mobile device to finalize the Microsoft Authenticator app setup.

  14. A confirmation will be displayed on your computer.  Click “Next”

Next you will register for SMS text messages as a second authentication method

  1. Enter your mobile phone number and click “Next”

  2. You will receive a text message with a 6 digit code

  3. Enter the 6 digit code on the computer and click “Next"

  4. You have now successfully registered SMS text messages as your second authentication method.  Click “Next”

  5. Verify the two authentication methods registered are shown on the final screen and click “Done”

Multi-Factor Authentication Wrap-Up

In this tutorial we setup the Microsoft Authenticator app as the primary authentication method. The next time you Sign In to a cloud application (box.uada.edu, outlook.office.com, etc.) you will see the screen below prompting you to approve the authentication method.

You may optionally check the box “Don’t ask again for 7 days” to remember this computer and browser for 7 days before you will be asked to reauthorize.

Important: If this is a shared computer, do NOT check the box to remember your login.
